It proves he understood people have different understanding of what a god is.
It proves the authors of the bible had contact with other tribes who were making up gods also.

The Canaanites did more than make contact with other gods. They did what Catholics did and incorporated them into their religion. The Catholics made saints out of them while the Canaanites made gods into patriarchs. Adam, Eve, Moses, Abraham, were all based on other gods.
