Attack or retreat?

RE: Attack or retreat?
@Sae: I can almost hear the violins playing - well I might if you were in any way deserving of pity. You are so hurt? My heart bleeds for you. You are acting many times an idiot it seems Sae. Spare us the spectacle please.

Quote: Very good point Padriac but definitely not what I meant!

OK.I may have misunderstood; I was commenting on what you actually said..

Quote:The thing that REALLY PISSES ME OFF is when I read Facebook updates from friends saying things like "I am nothing without God". Most of my friends are Christians and litterally believe everything in the Bible. I really feel the urge to confront them and tell them the truth about religion like:

THAT is not the behaviour of a friend.(on either side) Friends accept and respect each other as is, which includes agreeing to differ about some things, which may include politics and religion.

Getting pissed off with some stranger who gets in your face is another matter entirely. I loathe and despise proselytisers of any kind. (that includes aggressive atheists) .

If I feel put upon:IE my privacy/ personal space is invaded or I feel disrespected, I will say something, often quite unkind. Not remotely interested in attempting to change what passes for the mind of such people. I just want them to shut the fuck up and get out of my face. I will walk away if I can (eg In a public place)

With any luck they will be run over by a passing tank on their way to their next annoyance. (it's probably too much to hope that they spontaneously combust; I understand that's a myth)

PS My Facebook account (Tarquin Shagasty) is far too boring for anyone to bother making comments.Cool Shades

EvF,

Wow, you missed that post huh? Well here it is in its entirety:

Ok, its like this, if someone tells me they saw the sun crash to the ground I would reject the reality behind it without further evidence but I would understand why they held a belief in what they saw. I would also consider it a waste of time trying to argue them out of their position because I know the effect of personal experience.

As far as dualism is concerned I think we can just agree that there is no thing besides the material world. After thinking about posts regarding this thread and other musings I have had, I would either have to go back to being a theist and believe in my triune model of reality OR give up on personal experience as evidence.

I concede that personal experience is not evidence and there is probably NOT a soul. This is why we have these discussions though right?

Bolded for emphasis on my concession that there are probably no souls to speak of.

Sorry I hadn't read that post yet Smile - I've been inactive for a few days, dunno if you've noticed? Tongue

Very logically concluded by you I say. Indeed, I've also thought about how if anyone else had such a personal experience, I would see it as nonsense. So if I had it myself why would that make it any more special? This is why science has double blind trials, etc: Because the tests need to be objective, 'personal experience' in itself is not evidence, and needs to stay out of the way.

I'd agree those personal experiences aren't evidence of a soul either, although of course I believe there is such a thing Tongue
