I like Prince and was quite impressed that on his first albums he played all the instruments.  He was talented but not for everyone.

Prince is an artist I absolutely failed to appreciate during his lifetime.

Case in point:

I recently did a big article on this song for Anglotopia, even included five versions with Eric Clapton doing the solo*], but somehow, this version with Prince doing the solo** blows them all away. If I’m interpreting Dhani’s facial expressions accurately, even he’s blown away, and his Dad wrote the bloody song.

* the original White Album version, the Concert for Bangladesh, Live in Japan, The Concert for George, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee
** Clapton was already booked for the Royal Albert Hall the same night as this concert, FTR, so, unless they un-retired the Concorde just to allow Eric to fly from London to Cleveland, it’d be impossible for him to do both. but at least Prince just so happened to be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame that very night.

I liked the way Prince styled himself, but I didn't particularly care for his music.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that I can seriously only name two of his songs.

The performance was amazing...one of my favorites.

I remember the first time I heard "Kiss" by Prince. I was floored by the vocal range and that he brought rhythm guitar to the front of the song. I still have it in the rotation to this day.

I bartended at a place in Northern Arizona back in the 80s.  The song that I just can't do any more is "Raspberry Beret".  It was so damn popular on the juke box that I must have heard it a zillion times...that and Sade's "Smooth Operator".

However, I must admit to seeing "Purple Rain" more than once in the theater.

He was certainly an original character. I was never really into him either but he did do the soundtrack to the original Batman film with Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton, which I thought was pretty good, the most memorable songs from that being Partyman (when the Joker is defacing the art gallery) and Trust (where he gasses the populace from the big parade balloons).

As for me, apart from that Boyzone concert I was dragged to, the only proper concert I've been to was Bon Jovi, sometime around 2000 I think, which was pretty cool.

Prince was also a showman. Think James Brown dance moves and ripping it up on guitar too. That's a show I want to see.

He was a little guy who filled up a stage.  Definitely a showman!
