Unless the straight pride march in some way was spreading hate or giving itself a sense of superiority I see no reason why in theory one would be unacceptable?

I also support the principles behind gay pride marches and attend one of the biggest in the country every year in Brighton, where I'm from.

I can understand why a straight pride march may attract negative connotations, however that's just due to a peculiar sense of guilt society has created for its majorities (particularly, as mentioned, under Nu Labour. Possibly as a direct result of it's policies on equality and multiculturalism that created division and resentment where there was none to begin with) . In theory a straight pride march need be nothing but a celebration.

right yes because we should go back to the 1970s when the majority whites could say racist things,not hire blacks and asians for jobs,where the NF got quite a few votes,where interacial dating was taboo.

I'm clearly not saying lets go back to the 70's, read what I said and think about it. I'm saying society moved on from then itself, nu labour however, I feel pushed that progress back with pushing the issues of equality and integration way to hard and quickly and it stirred up resentment and tensions where there needed be none.

Majorities ARE made to feel guilty for the sins committed by them in the past. Groups of white British people push this bullshit guilt on other white British people for past wrongs to some how seem tollerent and liberal, but it causes even more issues. We should be moving on from a time when skin colour or sexual preference mattered not switching it around the other way. If a member of a majority criticises a minority group or someone of a minority the issue of racism or homophobia is bought up way to quickly when the minority element is a non issue. It completely removes the meanings from the words and undermines real issues people face.

I feel I've defended against homophobia on these boards fairly strongly, and to be honest, probably a bit to over aggressively at times, but you coming here on a big gay crusade and creating issues where there is none is a perfect example of what I'm talking about and just as non progressive and annoying as the anti-gay bigots themselves.

I don't know; maybe they enjoy marching together in some form of solidarity; maybe they just like having fun. Whatever the reason, I don't care, as long as anyone else has the right to do the same.

We shouldn't care what other people are celebrating, we should only care about celebrating who we are (to paraphrase thesummerqueen).

Josh, it is unfortunate that you had to come in here just as there was a flurry of postings that seemed to suggest some of us were anti-gay. Most of us aren't, and we tend to jump all over the ones who are if we feel they overstepped their boundaries. I do hope you find your stay here to be far more comforting and accepting than you seemed to believe in your initial posting.

I don't know why everyone's picking on your sexuality...I think admitting you're from the UK should have been the major point of contention...

It certainly was here from the 1960's,when we hated the Pommies*,who took the focus off the Italians and Greeks.(being a Pommie) who in turn were replaced by the Vietnamese. Today we hate the Muslims.

Australia is one of the more homophobic countries in the developed world. gay bashing was a national sport here until well into the 1980's. There was an especially vile case here in 1972 when a gay university lecturer ,Dr George Duncan was murdered in such an incident. 'The word' has always been that it was done by police. Dr Duncan was drowned in the Torrens river,which runs behind Adelaide university.This incident led to South Australia becoming the first state in Australia decriminalise homosexual activity.

Things began to change in this State with the election of a blatantly gay Premiere (like a US state governor) Don Dunstan.He liked safari suits an once wore pink hot pants to parliament.Everyone pretended he was just 'colourful'. Don had homosexual acts between consenting adults legalised in South Australia in the early 1970's

After four consecutive election wins, Dunstan's administration began to falter in 1978 following his dismissal of Police Commissioner Harold Salisbury, as controversy broke out over whether he had improperly interfered into a judicial investigation; the police had been systematically keeping dossiers on left-wing politicians. In addition, policy problems and unemployment began to mount, as well as unsubstantiated rumours of corruption and personal impropriety. Dunstan became increasingly short-tempered, and the strain was increased by the death of his second wife. His resignation from the premiership and politics in 1979 was abrupt after collapsing due to ill health, however he would live for another 20 years, remaining a vocal and outspoken campaigner for left-wing social policy.
