The idea that people once believed the world is flat is a myth. All people had to do was stand on a mountain and see the curvature of the earth. Ancient writings demonstrate that people understood that the earth was round.

Indeed you are correct, however I wasn't referring to the medieval Christianity, but in general terms. A flat earth hypothesis was still a popular belief in the past. I should have been more specific.

Beginning from ancient Greek astronomy, the paradigm of a round (or more accurately, spherical) earth gradually spread around the world supplanting the older cosmological belief in a flat earth.
