I always get a bit confused by the claim of god being "infinite". It makes sense to me in terms of describing things like time or the physical dimensions of a thing but in what sense would god be "infinite"? Is it an assertion that god exists outside of time? That he lasts forever and has always existed? Is a description of his capacities and abilities? Is a claim of "perfection" in that god is a "perfect being"?
Hume's argument is that a person gets their conception of "perfection" by adding what they know and have experienced until they concieve of something more perfect than anything they have experienced. People then label this the "most perfect" thing they can concieve of. In reality I doubt that this could actually be considered a real understanding of perfection but it is instead something we are able to convince ourselves is "perfection". This was in response to Descartes argument that our concept of perfection was god's mark of creation. Descartes claimed that god implanted this idea in us so that we could concieve of him and by association because we can understand perfection this demonstrates that god exists. Hume used his argument to disrupt the idea that the only place this idea of perfection could have come from is god.
